Brazilian virtuoso Rubens Salles brings his unique piano style to Cornelia Street Café . Based in New York for the past five years, Mr. Salles hails from Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil’s northeast, a region where his music was powered by a mix of African-originated rhythms, local beats and beliefs. Classically trained, Rubens is a lover of rhythms, educated in Jazz and a champion of new concepts. Rubens has been featured at Globo TV, Latin America’s largest television network, by highly respected journalist Lucas Mendes, who is also a correspondent for BBC Brazil. Rubens and band perform tunes from his latest album, ‘Liquid Gravity’ heavily influenced by free jazz icons such as Cecil Taylor, composer Charles Ives, Brazilian legend Hermeto Pascoal, and traditional folk styles like baião, bumba-meu-boi and choro. “Liquid Gravity plays with new forms of tension and resolution, and we attempt to take the audience to a different perception in Jazz”.

Some of the tunes will have a very special guest: French horn jazz master John Clark, whose four-decade career includes performances and recordings with stars such as Joe Lovano, Paquito D’Rivera, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, The Mingus Orchestra and Gil Evans.
